For the purpose of this post, let’s quickly take a glance at what SEO is all about.
What is Search Engine Optimization?
SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is an internet marketing strategy that helps businesses to improve search engine rankings. You probably have entered some keywords on the google search and get names of brands that offer what you are looking for.
You may have thought, it’s a random result- the answer is NO. Those websites/businesses you saw on the front page where optimized for that particular keyword (s).
Let’s take a quick look at these keywords
What this means is that when people who are looking for the services you offer search those keywords on the internet, your business will appear on the front page. If your business does not show up on the front page of Google search, then you are missing out on hundreds to thousands of prospects on daily basis.
For search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing to rank your website on their list, you need to know at least, a little bit about “Search Engine Optimization” (SEO).
With so many business competition on the web today, it is difficult to guarantee that your site will rank number one (#1) on Google or other search engines – but there are plenty of simple strategies you can employ to boost your site’s chances of ranking at least, among the top 3.
The question is; are you ready to rank on the front page of search engines?
If yes, here are some tips I used to rank number #1 for those keywords on Google search engine.
Let’s get started!
Ensure your URL is right
Your URL (Uniform Resource Locator), also known as your domain name, is the address that your website visitors will locate your website.
Example: https://www.backdesk.ng, https://www.feelynx.ng etc.
Like a light lit on a hill in a cold night, that is one of the first things website visitors see when they navigate to your website. That’s why it’s also the first place search engines look to understand what your site is about and place it on their list.
It’s also important to make sure your domain name is clean and beautiful. This means no special characters, no hashbangs, even page IDs should be avoided.
Create specific titles and descriptions for each page
Every page has a title tag and description. We are talking about short texts that precisely and plainly define what your business does with just a few keywords.
While the description is not observable nor seen by your visitors, it is very vital for search engines!
Basically, the title and description are the first things search engines like Google uses to determine your site’s rank.
Leverage Anchor texts
Yes! It’s very important.
Anchor texts are what visitors can click on to be taken straight to another web page, either on your site or anywhere on the Internet.
Wordstream defined Anchor text as “the clickable text in a hyperlink. SEO best practices dictate that anchor text is relevant to the page you’re linking to, rather than generic text. The blue, underlined anchor text is the most common as it is the web standard, although it is possible to change the colour and underlining through HTML code”.
The letters on blue colour are all anchor text, a click on it will take you to another page.
For instance Read the full benefits of SEO (If you click on: Read the full benefits of SEO” it will take you to another page)
Although, like wordstream said, the color can be changed just like the one on this page is orange.
Anchor texts help your web users to navigate your website and find references.
Never leave out the Alt texts to all your images
Search engines are good at reading texts on your website. They also take time to understand what’s displayed in a photo or graphic. When writing alt texts, be sure to precisely describe what is shown in the image, also try to include at least, a few keywords related to what you do or what your website is about.
Site structure should have the right headers
Every page on your website should have a title, a subtitle, etc. When search engines crawl your website, they’ll comprehend your content well if you explain them the text hierarchy. The most relevant part is the title of your page and you should define it as H1 (in the Text’s Editor). The H1 should be descriptive the page’s content and you shouldn’t have more than one H1 per page. Choose carefully and don’t forget to include your keywords. Following your H1, is H2, H3 and so on. The clearer your text structure is, the easier search engines will digest your site’s content.
