HOW TO ENHANCE READABILITY FOR YOUR WEBSITE CONTENT AND BLOG POSTS

Have you designed a nice-looking website with quality content which ranks high on search engines; but still wondering why your Website and Blog Posts are not converting traffic as they should?!

In my years of working as a website designer, I have come across a good number of business owners (especially small start-ups) in Nigeria and other countries like the United Kingdom (UK) who are puzzled with this same question.

Now, here’s something you need to know – even with good SILO, well-segmented content, awesome colours, graphics and clearly defined Call To Actions (CTA), your website visitors still NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE MESSAGE you are trying to pass across. This is one big challenge most business start-ups face which unfortunately increases their website bounce rates.

Simple and clean fonts like Arial, Times New Roman or Verdana enhances the readability of your website content. Decorative fonts, which include those named Informal, or Chiller, may give your website page or post more personality. They help make your content stand out from ordinary typefaces.

After much research and successful surveys (using Abuja, Nigeria as a case study), I am giving out the following actionable tips as a deliberate attempt to get you familiar with the best and effective ways to enhance readability for your website content and blog posts.

Let’s get familiar with the use of use of headings, sub-headings, paragraph, breaks and other text formatting tags for websites and blog posts.

Tip #1. Bold headlines

Bold headlines attract attention and help your readers understand what your content is entirely about. It also helps your website and blog contents become more scannable especially for website visitors and blog readers who are only searching for a specific bit of information.

Bold headlines break up lengthy blog posts and allows your readers scan read your blog and persuade them to read the post.

Furthermore, make sure your headlines clearly support the topic and don’t forget to introduce your keywords, as these will help generate more traffic to your webpage or blog post.

Tip #2. Sub-headings

Sub-headings do a lot of good to your website pages and blog posts as they help break your long texts and make it easier for website visitors and blog readers who may not want to read an entire content of a blog post or web page but choose to scan through for more interesting or relevant points instead.

Sub-headings help your readers get insights of your content at a glance.

It also helps them decide if the whole section is worth reading or probably bookmark it to read later (when it’s more convenient).

Please note that excessive use of heading tags (especially sub-headings) hurt your website and blog if you hope to optimize for Search Engine Optimization – SEO ranking.

Make sure there are at least 80 words below every heading or sub-heading tags on every website page. This may sometimes seem difficult in which case, I would suggest you make use of bold tags instead of the header tags on your website pages or blog posts.

Tip #3. Paragraphs

Paragraphs help keep the content your website and blog posts well-spaced and this helps make your texts easier to read on all device (especially mobile devices).

Paragraphs also help set your readers up with an overview of the information you intend to address on the website page or blog post. They are beneficial as they help shape your thoughts and the readers’ thoughts. Even if you choose not to outline your entire blog post or website content in a starter paragraph, you may tease your readers into wanting to know more about your topic(s).

As you add new points to your web pages and blog posts, I’ld suggest you also consider adding new paragraphs for your website visitors and readers to better understand the content and message you are trying to pass across. I do not think this is different from the way you communicate in your regular letters using writing tools such as Microsoft Word.

Tip #4. Bold Font

Bold fonts help with emphasis and draw your reader’s attention to vital points. Bold fonts also help optimize your keywords for better Indexing on Search Engines. In essence, making use of Bold fonts on your website pages and blog contents help your overall website rank higher above other competing websites.

Tip #5. Overview and Conclusion

Overviews go a long way in helping your website visitors and Blog post readers discern if the content they are about to read is relevant to them while conclusions highlight all the key points of your written content which sometimes offers the way out. In addition to your sub-headings, bullet and emphasized points in bold, your overviews and conclusions provide enough information for website visitors and blog post readers who may find it difficult to absorb too many information or who may find themselves busy at that certain time and may choose to quickly glance through.

Tip 6#. BE CONSISTENT

Trying to add some fancy to your website content may not be necessary especially when it comes to blog posts fonts. I suggest you stick with one choice (such as Times New Roman), add a couple of styles for variety (example: bold, italics, all capitals). Doing these will keep you from making the mistake of overwhelming your readers with contents and write-ups that look like it was stitched together.

Finally, I suggest you continue writing engaging contents, but make sure you focus on readability as this will determine your conversion rate.
